Classical Civilisation

Whether you want to learn about our origins and history, read literature, explore the effects of the past on the present or learn to apply science to the arts, Classical Civilisation A Level has something for everyone.

Classical Civilisation is the study of the culture, arts, history and thoughts of the civilisations of ancient Greece and Rome.  It is one of the most varied and interdisciplinary of all subjects, featuring a wide range of options including the study of literature, history, philosophy, art and religion. The study of A Level Classical Civilisation requires students to develop the analytical skills needed to understand and engage in disciplines such as art appreciation and textual criticism. The subject’s involvement with a range of disciplines such as History, Philosophy, English, Religious Education and Art, makes it constantly fresh and challenging and encourages mental versatility.

Our intent is therefore not only to teach the appropriate examination specification but also to:

• Provide students with the opportunity to study a wide range of topics and sources which will inspire and motivate them to engage further with the Classical world
• To encourage students to respond critically and engage with a wealth of sources and ideas, thus equipping them with advanced analytical skills
• To engender and foster a love of and genuine interest in the Classical world, regardless of prior knowledge and/or study
• To encourage students to develop an awareness and appreciation of the links between modern society and that of the Classical world and hence an enhanced awareness of what makes us ‘human’

Classical Civilisation is only offered at A Level and no prior knowledge is required. All units of the course are studied with reference to English only. We follow the OCR Classical Civilisation course, currently the units studied are: The World of the Hero, Greek Art and Greek Religion.
